Walks in the Chilterns Near The Peacock Country Inn

Set within the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, The Peacock Country Inn is well placed for guests looking to explore some of the most established walking routes in Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. From long distance national trails to short circular countryside walks near Thame and Chinnor, the area offers options for different levels of experience and time available. Many routes can be reached within minutes of the inn, making it straightforward to plan a walk in the morning and return for lunch, dinner, or a relaxed evening stay.

The Phoenix Trail

The Phoenix Trail is a level, well surfaced route connecting Thame and Princes Risborough. Following a former railway line, it is popular with walkers looking for an accessible and clearly marked path with open views across the countryside. The route stretches for around seven miles end to end, though shorter sections can easily be enjoyed. Its flat terrain makes it suitable for families, casual walkers, and those travelling with dogs.

The Ridgeway National Trail

The Ridgeway is one of Britain’s oldest paths, running for eighty seven miles between Ivinghoe Beacon and Avebury. The section crossing the Chilterns offers wide views, rolling chalk downland, and a sense of space that feels distinctly different from woodland routes. Walkers can join for shorter stretches near Whiteleaf Hill or Bledlow Ridge, making it a practical option for guests staying nearby who want a more elevated and open landscape experience.

Whiteleaf Hill and Cross

Whiteleaf Hill is known for its striking chalk cross and panoramic views across Princes Risborough and the surrounding Vale. The walk up is steady but manageable, with several circular options available from the base. It suits guests looking for a rewarding viewpoint within a relatively compact route. Clear sightlines and open ground make this a popular choice for photographers and visitors wanting a classic Chiltern setting.

Chinnor Hill Circular Walk

Chinnor Hill offers a varied circular route combining woodland, chalk grassland, and ridge views. The path includes moderate inclines and uneven ground, making it more suited to walkers comfortable with natural terrain. From higher points, there are broad views across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. The route can be adjusted in length, allowing flexibility depending on the time available.

Bledlow Ridge Woodland Route

Bledlow Ridge provides a quieter walking experience through mature woodland and open clearings. The terrain is gently undulating, and several linked footpaths create circular options of different distances. It appeals to walkers looking for shade during warmer months and a less exposed alternative to open ridge routes. Wildlife sightings are common, particularly in early morning and late afternoon.

Thame Circular Riverside Walk

For those looking for a gentler route, the Thame circular walk follows sections of the River Thame and surrounding meadows. The ground is largely level, with well defined paths suitable for relaxed walking. This route suits guests combining a countryside walk with time spent in Thame’s independent shops and cafés, making it easy to plan a half day outing before returning to The Peacock Country Inn.

Aston Rowant and Beacon Hill

Aston Rowant National Nature Reserve offers more challenging terrain, including steep climbs and expansive views. The Beacon Hill section rewards walkers with far reaching perspectives across Oxfordshire. This route suits experienced walkers looking for a more demanding outing. It is also known for red kite sightings, adding interest beyond the landscape itself.

Henton and Surrounding Footpaths

Several public footpaths begin directly from Henton and neighbouring villages, allowing guests to walk without needing to drive. These routes pass through farmland, hedgerows, and smaller wooded sections, offering a quieter alternative to well known trails. Distances vary, making them suitable for short morning walks or longer countryside circuits starting and ending at The Peacock Country Inn.

Why Guests Return
To The Peacock

We had a large family party here yesterday. The staff were amazing, setting a treasure hunt for the children and providing activity packs. The food was incredible. Very tasty and well presented. We felt totally relaxed. Our party consisted of a 94 year old and a 3 year old and we ALL enjoyed ourselves. Thank you everyone for making my birthday a special one. The setting is amazing and I’m definitely coming back to stay. It’s such a shame it’s not on my doorstep or else I’d be a regular.
